English 12B

English 12B

English 12 is a course that develops both academic and life skills. Concepts are presented in creative and lively ways that reinforce learning goals and engage students. Literary selections include short fiction and poetry from around the globe, modern drama works, and a contemporary novel. Nonfiction selections feature historical correspondence, diaries, logs, and famous courtroom arguments. Life reading skills target forms, applications, and work-related communication. Grammar review and vocabulary development are included in every unit.

Storytelling is at the core of language arts. Throughout human history, stories have informed us, brought us together, and broadened our horizons. Today’s storytelling is taking a new format: podcasting. In this course, students will have the chance to tell stories in a modern way through podcasts. Students will be encouraged to explore the different forms of podcasts (interviews, panels, reviews, etc.) as they curate a portfolio that best represents all they have learned. Focusing on speaking and listening skills, this course will also feature writing.

Along with courses that fit this description, students can elect to take courses that focus on novel study, podcasting, college and career tech, and writing for resiliency.

Novel Study - Reading is all around us- whether it is an advertisement, a newspaper, a book, or directions for putting something together, humans are constantly reading. However, reading novels, both fiction and non-fiction, takes us to places we have never been before; these texts open up a new world of possibilities, allow us to learn from the characters, connect events from the text to our own lives, and travel places without leaving our homes. In this course, we will have the chance to read three amazing novels, all set in different time periods and places, and each with their own beautiful lessons to teach us. We will explore how authors construct their stories, how novels are developed, and add to our understanding of each text through exploration and research.

Podcasting - Storytelling is at the core of language arts.

College and Career Tech - English 12B is a course that allows students to choose a career prep or college prep focus. For either path, the course content revolves around Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers. Students will engage in a study of the text and explore how Gladwell argues his “story of success” and “what makes high-achievers different.” Students will also study one of two textbooks: College Success or Professional and Technical Writing.

Writing for Resiliency - Creative writing allows us to find meaning and express our story. Some of the most moving and memorable works have been born of the most difficult situations. Together, we will immerse ourselves in literary works that have inspired generations of both readers and writers. By studying author's craft and confronting our own emotions and experiences, we will learn how to create cathartic, meaningful works that inspire others and forge a spirit of resilience. Course content and assignments will include analytical, research-based, and informational text writing. It is a course that immerses students in both the study of and writing of creative texts. Through challenging ourselves as writers, we will tell our own stories and take back our own narratives.
