Language Arts 1
In first grade, beginning readers work to become fluent readers. Understanding phonemic awareness, comprehension, vocabulary and phonics.' second-semester course continues to teach students to attack new words using a variety of decoding and contextual strategies. Students are given daily opportunities to apply these skills to decodable and authentic texts. They are taught to think about what they read through a variety of guided reading strategies. In writing, students create increasingly complex compositions and improve their handwriting.
